Either way, the Japanese mythological creature called kappa (河童), meaning “river child”, has stolen the show to the point that statues and drawings of the creature appear everywhere in the Kappabashi area. Some attribute it to the Japanese term kappa (合羽) meaning “raincoat”, others to a local merchant in the area with the name Kappaya. According to the official Kappabashi website, the name “Kappa” has fuzzy origins.
